This was a game Villa should never have lost, three goals
were scored in the first five minutes on a windy pitch.
The home team started with the wind at their backs, but it
was Villa who took the lead, in the first minute they were
awarded a free kick on the right, Sam Shone's ball in was
met by Dave Mason who headed powerfully home. Within two
minutes the home side were level, a cross from the right was
headed home. With five minutes played a wind assisted cross
shot from the right flew into the top corner of the net.
Villa started to respond to the early set back, John
Winstanley played in Dave Mason who shot wide, three minutes
later he came close again with a shot just over the bar.
As Villa were starting to assert themselves they suffered a
further set back on fifteen minutes when the home side were
awarded a dubious penalty as there was more than a hint of a
dive from a Turton player. The visitors kept their composure
and set about trying to retrieve the situation. On nineteen
minutes they were awarded a free kick on the right edge of
the area, Sam
Shone's effort skimmed the bar. Two minutes later Villa were
back in the match thanks to a solo effort on the left from
Rhenden Pillay who cut into the box before beating the
keeper with a low shot into the bottom corner.
For the remainder of the half the game was quite even as
both sides had chances , Turton hit the Villa bar, and Pete
Ryder had a thunderous drive from a free kick blocked by an
unfortunate Turton player in the wall. There were no further
goals in the half as Villa looked forward to the second half
and the assistance of the wind.
From the restart it was one way traffic as Villa took
control, with three minutes played Liam Conway came close
shooting just over the bar. A minute later a Villa free kick
was cleared for a corner, from which Dave Mason hit the bar
with a header. Euxton continued to press, Rhenden Pillay won
a free kick on the right, from the kick Matt Conway headed
into the side netting.
He came close again on the hour , picking up the ball from a
throw in on the left his shot skimmed the top of the bar.
At this point the home side were hanging on, Liam Conway
broke down the right before crossing to Dave Mason who had a
close range header blocked on the line. Villa eventually
drew level on seventy minutes , Dylan Southern celebrated
his return to the side by hitting a shot under the bar after
cutting in from the right. It now seemed only a matter of
time before Villa got the winner.
With ten minutes remaining all Villa's hard work to get back
in the match was undone when the home side scored again
following a rare breakaway. Villa pressed right up until the
end, but the home defence held out leaving the visitors very
disappointed at full time having taken nothing from the
game.
