Winstanley
Dawson
In the end this was a hard fought point, with Villa firstly
looking in control. Then going behind before coming back to
share the points, which on the balance of play was the least
they deserved.
The home side started well, shooting just over the bar in
the first minute.Villa then started to settle and put
Thornton under pressure. On ten minutes Rhenden Pillay
caused problems on the right with a good ball into the box,
which the home defence managed to clear. Four minutes later
John Winstanley had the ball in the net, only to be ruled
offside.
At this point the better chances were falling to the
visitors, and on twenty three minutes they took the lead , a
good ball in from Noel Clarkson on the left found Sam Shone
who played through John Winstanley who this time was able to
beat the keeper and put Villa deservedly in front.
On thirty minutes Thornton had a chance
when following a cutback from the right a low shot forced
Stuart Yates into a good save at his near post.
Two minutes later Thornton won a free kick, this time Stuart
Yates saved for a corner, from the resulting kick, Thornton
shot wide. From this point for the remainder of the half
Villa were on top forcing a number of free kicks and corners
which the home defence managed to keep out. So a
satisfactory half for the visitors against a strong home
side.
Villa came out for the second half feeling that a second
goal would wrap up the game and so they started strongly,
with three minutes played Sam Shone released John Winstanley
on the right, his early cross was volleyed just wide by
Danny Dawson. The next phase of the match saw both sides
have chances , Thornton headed over from a corner, then
immediately afterwards
Villa forced a corner which was eventually cleared.
On sixty five minutes a Danny Dawson free kick found Rhenden
Pillay who shot past the foot of the post. They nearly
claimed a second goal minutes later when a last ditch tackle
robbed John Winstanley as he was about to shoot.
Then from a corner Matt Conway again came close, putting his
shot just wide. At this point it looked like one goal may
have been enough to give Villa the points.
With fifteen minutes to go the game turned on its head,
Thornton were awarded a free kick on the edge of the Villa
area, the resulting kick flew into the net giving Stuart
Yates no chance. Five minutes later a through ball caught
out the Villa defence and the home side took the lead. Villa
responded well , with his first touch of the game substitute
Will Monks played in Danny Dawson whose finish was clinical
to level the scores. For the remainder of the game it was
Villa pushing for a winner, but in the end they had to
settle for a point.
