A vital game for both sides was clinched by Villa with a
goal late into stoppage time, this was no more than their
spirited second half performance warranted, coming from two
goals down to win the match.
The game was always going to be close between two well
matched sides. Villa started brightly and came close after
five minutes when good interplay between Sam Shone, Elliot
Dunn and Danny Nolan set up Liam Conway , but his effort was
just over the bar. Kirkham came close themselves two minutes
later with a shot over the bar. Euxton continued to play
intelligent football and caused the visitors further
problems after ten minutes when Elliot Dunn released Danny
Nolan who was closed down by the Kirkham defence.
For the next ten minutes their was little in the way of
goalmouth action as both sides contested the midfield,
trying to get the upper hand, it was Kirkham who made the
breakthrough on 21 minutes. A long ball out from midfield
caught out the Villa defence, and a well taken shot put the
visitors ahead. The goal lifted Kirkham and they started to
put pressure on the home defence in what was easily their
best spell of the game. It was 35 minutes before Villa
troubled the visitors again. From a corner Danny Nolan was
unlucky to see a header cleared off the line, Matt Atherton
following up saw his shot blocked by the Kirkham defence.
It was now end to end , Craig Chambers was close with a shot
that was blocked , from the resulting corner Rhys Crombie
saw his header fly just over the bar, it was then Kirkham's
turn to attack, they came close with a low shot from the
right across the face of goal , and came even closer a
minute later when a long ball created an opening, forcing
Shaun Gibbs into a fine save diving to his left. The half
finished with Villa coming close, they were awarded a free
kick on the right of the area , Matt Atherton took the kick,
but the effort was blocked by the visitors wall.
From the start of the second half manager Mark McHugh moved
out of the dugout to a different part of the pitch to get a
better prospective of the play, were he was later joined by
the Kirkham manager. Five minutes after the restart Villa
suffered a further set back when Kirkham scored a second
goal. From this point the visitors were content to play a
containing game to protect their two goal cushion. Trying to
disrupt Villa's build up play, in order to frustrate the
home side.
One of the great strength's of this young Villa side is that
they never know when they are beaten, so they continued to
press the visitors back, they were rewarded after an hour
when Matt Atherton was brought down in the box, Liam Conway
confidently put away the resulting penalty. It was the
visitors who were now feeling the pressure, After seventy
minutes Villa drew level when they were awarded a second
penalty. Liam Conway again took the kick, and this time
found the net via the post and the back of the keeper.
Kirkham were rocked by the Villa comeback. The home side
were not finished as Tom Whittaker and Adrian Briggs joined
the action , allowing Villa to go to three at the back as
they pushed for a winner. With ninety minutes up the
visitors were happy to take the draw and keep a three point
gap between the teams. The game had one more twist in the
tail as four minutes into injury time Liam Conway completed
his hat-trick with a shot, to give his side a deserved
victory and put the two teams level on points.
