Villa's best second half performance of the season saw a
shaky first half turn into a second half rout as they ran in
six goals to comfortably take the points.
The visitors started well and there was little to chose
between the sides, Villa were a little apprehensive
following their previous weeks performance, and Wren Rovers
settled well, playing neat crisp football. The early play
was mainly in midfield, but on ten minutes the home side
created an opening.
John Winstanley started the move releasing Liam Conway down
the right, his early ball in was met by Anton Martin, but
the shot flew over the bar.A minute later Villa took an
unexpected lead. An innocuous looking ball was played into
the Wren Rovers box, and to everyone's amazement the
visitors keeper tried to dribble the ball past Liam Conway,
lost procession and could only watch as the ball was put
into the empty net.
This should have settled Euxton but it was the visitors who
took control. On fifteen minutes keeper Karl Sutton had to
react quickly to turn away a deflected shot. The visitors
continued to press Villa back and five minutes later came
close again with a header, they continued to dictate the
play and came close with a second header. On twenty eight
minutes there was more for Villa to contend with as they had
to work hard to keep out a free kick. This pattern of play
continued for the remainder of the half, and it would be
fair to say Villa were relieved to get to half-time still a
goal to the good.
It was time for one of Manager Mark McHugh's inspired
substitutions, at the restart Ian Curwen and Liam
McGladrigan joined the action as Villa restructured their
formation. They now started to push the visitors back, at
this point Wren Rovers still looked dangerous, with two
minutes played their left winger put a shot just wide. The
game changed completely on 52 minutes, Anton Martin broke
down the right, and cut into the box before unleashing an
unstoppable drive into the top corner. Three minutes later a
back pass was missed by the Wren Rovers keeper, allowing
Adrian Briggs to whip the ball away and run it into the
empty net.
The visitors looked finished but they were lifted briefly on
the hour when John Winstanley was adjudged to have fouled in
the box, the visitors scored comfortably from the spot.
Their relief was short lived as a minute later Villa
regained their three goal advantage. Good work down the left
by Mick Bradshaw saw the ball hit into the box, a clever
flick on by Liam Conway put Adrian Briggs in, his first time
volley was superbly struck to restore Villa's advantage.
Adrian Briggs returned the favour two minutes later as his
pinpoint through ball released Liam Conway whose pace took
him into the box, and around the keeper before driving an
angled shot into the net.
It was now all Villa as every attack looked like producing a
goal, as the visitors struggled to contain the probing
through balls from the midfield area. They were caught again
on 75 minutes as Anton Martin broke down the right, he
shrugged off a challenge retained his balance before rolling
the ball past the keeper and in off the far post. Mick
Bradshaw came close on 80 minutes as he saw a shot saved.
Five minutes later it was seven as Liam Conway again broke
down the right and again beat the keeper with an angled
drive, he nearly made it eight two minutes later as his low
shot missed the foot of the post. In injury time Wren Rovers
pulled a goal back, but by then the match was over as a
contest.
