Once
the machine clicks into gear, it would seem that there’s no
stopping it. Poulton came calling and found a Villa side
still smarting from the injustices they felt that they had
been dealt in mid-week, and really the match was as one
sided as the score suggests, except for a spell ten minutes
from time when the home side eased up and the visitors were
able to grab a late consolation. Much, it must be said, to
the annoyance of ‘The Big Man’, who takes a pride in his
clean sheets, and no doubt had a few choice words to impart
in the dressing room afterwards.
Mat Atherton began the rout, cleverly lobbing the advancing
keeper with not much more than five minutes on the clock.
The same player nearly notched again five minutes later when
put through by Neil (what a find) Davies. However the
reprieve for Town was short lived, as soon after, Atherton
layed on for George Craddock to grab his first with a very
clever back header.
Villa continued to dominate and were rewarded with two more
before the break. Daz (remember him) Davies broke down the
right and fed David Heald, who powered his way to the
bye-line before squaring across goal to where Atherton
headed the queue of those waiting to apply the finish. A
couple of minutes later, Atherton again turned provider for
Craddock who made it four at the interval.
The second half was barely three minutes old before Craddock
completed his hat-trick, Heald again using his power to good
effect to set up the tap-in. We’re going to miss him during
his extended break you know! Stuart Bingham was next to get
in on the act, again benefiting from Heald’s industry.
Fifteen minutes from time, Villa went seven up when Neil
(what a find) Davies capped an excellent afternoon’s work
with a fine shot in off the under side of the bar.
Everyone seems to be beating everyone else, if you know what
I mean, so the league has a very open look to it, albeit
that Wren Rovers have established a bit of a gap as early
pace-setters. Villa next make the long trip to Dalton, and
with the teams currently on the same points tally, both will
be desperate to gain the advantage.
Villa Line-up:
Baxter, Walker, D.Davies (C.Chambers 65), Bolton, Bromham,
N. Davies, Loughlin, Bingham, Atherton, Heald (Kirkpatrick
70), Craddock (Stewart 60)
