In the end a comfortable win as Villa struggled to turn
their supremacy into goals, following a bright start from
the home side Villa gradually took control, but it was late
in the match before they finally made the game safe.
For the first half hour the match was very even, Burnley had
two lively strikers who caused the Villa defence problems in
the early stages of the game. The first chances fell to
Euxton, a quick James O'Loughlin free kick created an
opening for Liam Conway but the attempt was cleared for a
corner, then Dylan Southern played through James O'Loughlin,
but his shot was just past the top of the post. The home
side responded and a minute later came close themselves with
a shot which hit the Villa post.
The visitors then took the lead, Liam Conway set up a chance
for Sam Shone, he attempted to lob the keeper who somehow
scrambled back to prevent the ball crossing the line, but
Sam Shone following up was able to turn the ball in. Burnley
were still very much in the game, and came close with a
header over the bar. On sixteen minutes they drew level, a
ball in from the right was volleyed in giving Dave Bibby in
the Villa goal no chance.
From this point on Villa started to take control as they
pushed the home side back with sustained pressure, on twenty
minutes Sam Shone shot over following good work by Liam
Conway, who a minute later came close himself, shooting just
past the foot of the post. With thirty minutes gone a ball
in from the left by James O'Loughlin found Dylan Southern,
but his shot was just too high. Two minutes later the Villa
pressure paid off, a long throw from Danny Brown fell to
Liam Conway who was able to put a low shot just inside the
post. Villa continued to press for the remainder of the
half, with a minute left Liam Conway nearly claimed a second
when put through by Neil Bretherton but the keeper saved.
Villa started the second half as they finished the first,
within a minute Neil Bretherton saw his shot saved, then
following a corner Pete Ryder put a long range shot over the
bar. It was now all Villa as they continued to put the home
defence under pressure. On sixty five minutes Sam Shone cut
in from the left, only to see his low shot turned away for a
corner, he came even closer two minutes later when his shot
was tipped onto the crossbar.
Euxton were determined to close out the game, but were
having no luck in front of goal, with ten minutes remaining
a short corner from Guy Clarkson set up Craig Chambers, but
his shot was wide. Two minutes later Guy Clarkson broke
clear on the left, his fiercely hit shot flying just too
high. The third Villa goal when it eventually came was a
sublimely taken finish from John Winstanley, who cut in from
the right, before trickling a left foot shot inside the
post.
It was no more than Villa's pressure deserved, in the
closing minutes they could have increased their lead
further, as Liam Conway was ruled offside when put through
by Andy Jakiemczuk, who then also set up a chance for John
Winstanley, but the keeper saved. In the end a good result
against a side who always try to make a game of it.
