Report - A vital match for both teams saw Villa take the
points with goals either side of the half time break to hold
onto second place in the division.
The game was played on a very heavy pitch and for the early
part of the match the players also had to contend with heavy
rain. That being said, both teams tried to make the most of
the poor conditions and play attractive football.
It was Villa who settled first and looked to impose
themselves on their opponents from the start. They came
close after five minutes when Elliot Dunn saw his header
saved by the keeper. They came close again a few minutes
later when Rhenden Pillay beat the offside trap only to be
foiled by the keeper. The Villa pressure continued to build
and they forced a number of corners without making a
breakthrough.
Following one corner Michael Thompson came close heading
past the post. It looked as if the half was going to finish
even, but with a minute remaining a ball down the centre
released Sam Shone, the keeper saved his first effort but
was unable to hold the ball and he made no mistake with the
follow up.
It was still a tight game but Villa fully deserved their
half time lead.
The visitors came out for the second half in determined
mood, but fell further behind within two minutes of the
restart. Rhenden Pillay started the move with a break down
the right, his early cross was met by Elliot Dunn who looped
a header into the top corner. The home side were now in
control and continued to press to increase their lead
further. With an hour played Sam Shone put a low shot past
the foot of the post. Ten minutes later Mick Bradshaw was
brought down in the box, but the referee waved play on.
Villa came close again after seventy two minutes when Sean
Parkin had a shot blocked, and following up, put his shot
over the bar. The last fifteen minutes saw Charnock's best
spell of the game, Shaun Gibbs produced a great save to keep
out a close range header, then following a free kick, Elliot
Dunn cleared off the line. The Villa defence once again were
outstanding and in the end the result was fair.
