Villa produced an exhilarating performance, at times playing
majestic football, with solid defending, inspired midfield
play and clinical finishing, this against a form side
unbeaten in their last five games.
For the first ten minutes there was little pattern to the
play, then Villa started to impose themselves , on ten
minutes Liam Conway cut in from the right, only for his low
shot to be saved by the keeper. With Fourteen minutes played
a Sam Shone flick on played through Liam Conway, who just
failed to make contact. One minute later and Villa were
deservedly ahead.
Sam Shone saw his low shot saved for a corner, the resulting
kick was cleared for a second corner. This was cleared, but
Elliot Dunn following up was fouled on the edge of the area.
Lee Chambers a regular goalscorer took the kick, driving
through the wall to put Villa ahead.
The goal lifted Villa and minutes later they had a second,
good work on the left by John Winstanley caused problems, as
Tempest tried to clear a typical forceful challenge from
Elliot Dunn created an opening for Liam Conway who made no
mistake with a low shot to the keepers right. The home side
were without doubt in the ascendancy, Craig Chambers won a
free kick on the right, which the visitors managed to clear.
They then had their best spell of the game forcing a couple
of corners. The Villa defence stood firm, and came back
strongly almost adding a third on the half hour when John
Winstanley set up Elliot Dunn who put a low shot just past
the far post.
The early period of the second half was always going to be
critical, a third goal for Villa and the match would be as
good as over, but a goal for the visitors would put pressure
on the home side. To their credit Villa took control from
the restart , on forty six minutes a Rhys Crombie free kick
on the left was headed just wide by Darren Davies. Tempest
never got the chance to assert themselves as Villa upped
their game from the first half with both Sam Shone and
Elliot Dunn coming close within minutes of the restart.
The deciding goal came on fifty three minutes following
intense Villa pressure. From a corner Elliot Dunn saw his
shot blocked, Lee Chambers following up had his effort
tipped over the bar. The resulting corner was collected by
the keeper, but his clearance was picked up by Mick Bradshaw
who won a race with a defender and the keeper to get the all
important third goal.
With the final third of the game still to play it was now
one way traffic as Villa dominated, John Winstanley came
close shooting past the post following good build up play by
Sam Shone and Liam Conway. Mick Bradshaw set up Liam Conway,
but his shot was just too high, then Elliot Dunn, who could
easily on another day have netted three or four, was again
unlucky to see his shot fly wide.
Villa's pressure continued, Mick Bradshaw shot just over the
bar, Elliot Dunn again saw his effort blocked following a
free kick. It seemed only a matter of time before Villa
added to their lead, and they eventually did with five
minutes remaining when Liam Conway cut in from the right to
beat the keeper with a low shot inside the far post. Four
minutes later Villa added a fifth when Liam Conway played a
short corner to Rick Wood who beat the keeper with some
aplomb to complete an excellent result which saw Villa
finish the year in fine style.
