After the excellent start of winning our
first two games this fixture was always going to be a
tougher test for the Villa boys having lost to Aspull in a
pre season friendly. With Matthew away Adam volunteered for
goalkeeping duties and Kurt replaced Adam in defence. The
non-arrival of the referee also meant a debut for Joe
Morris.
Straight from the kick off Villa were
confidently passing the ball around Liam was put through
down the right and sent in a cross which the keeper had to
push behind for a corner. From the corner, the ball fell to
Connor on the edge of the box but his shot was charged down
by the defence. Aspull immediately broke down the left and
were through on goal but were thwarted by a fine save from
Adam. Villa kept up the pressure and were beginning to
dominate the game Barney going past three defenders
releasing Jake who was unlucky not to score. Against the run
of play Aspull caught us on the break and managed to sneak
the ball just inside the left hand post. 1–0 Aspull.
Matty limped off still suffering from a
crunching tackle in the opening minute and was replaced by
Samuel. Aspull seemed to raise their game and were soon on
the attack again but were denied by combination of Adam and
Mikey. Another Aspull break and it was Kurt this time who
produced a goal saving tackle in the penalty area. The
resulting corner was never cleared and Aspull managed to
poke the ball in to make it 2-0. Straight from the kick off
Euxton were on the attack and Jake unleashed a powerdriver
that Peter Lorimer would have been proud of, the keeper
couldn’t hold on to it and Jack was on hand to tap the ball
in to make it 2-1. Euxton kept up the pressure and were
unlucky not to equalise with a Nathan effort being ruled out
for offside. Samuel and Liam also went close. Villa rode
their luck on the stroke of half time with Aspull hitting
the woodwork twice before Mikey managed to clear off the
line.
At half time Brad replaced Connor and the 2nd
half began much the same as the first. Adam producing a fine
save and Nathan and Brad combining down the right with
Nathan going close. Euxton kept pressurising winning a
series of corners but were just unable to stick the ball in
the back of the net. As in the first half despite Villa the
pressure Aspull caught us on the break with their number 9
running straight through and putting them 3-1 up.
Villa kept going with Samuel Jack and Liam
all going close but we were having no luck in the final
third of the pitch today.
The final quarter of the game saw Barney on
the receiving end of a series unfortunate challenges which
seemed to affect the flow of our play and three late goals
being conceded. Despite being down the boys never let their
heads drop and were always looking for the next goal forcing
three corners in the final minute but it was not to be.
A 6-1 scoreline does not reflect how well the
Villa played today and the improvements made since these
teams last met. Stick together boys. Keep playing as a team
and the results will come.
