“Comeback Kids”
Well the new
season had finally arrived. The Management team sported
their new suntans and all were eagerly waiting to see if the
hard work in pre-season training had paid off.
From the
referee’s whistle, the Villa attacked the St. Greg’s goal
and created numerous scoring chances in the first 15 mins.
But then the home supporters were silenced when St. Greg’s
first attack into the Villa half saw a long range effort fly
into the goal, 0-1.
The boys didn’t
let their heads drop and continued to press forward and the
equaliser soon came through ‘new boy’, Jake. St. Greg’s
spurred on by this soon restored their lead, yet only for
Villa to level again at 2-2 through another new debutant,
Jack. Right on the stroke of half-time a penalty was awarded
to St. Greg’s for handball. Matty B dived the right way but
was unable to keep it out, 2-3.
The second half
saw James come on to make his Villa debut. The onslaught
towards the St. Greg’s goal began. Jack slotted home, 3-3.
Then Liam came in from the right-wing to fire Villa into the
lead, 4-3. Jack then grabbed his “hat trick” when he headed
home from Barney’s corner, 5-3. St. Greg’s then hit back
when they finally broke through what had been a more
resilient Villa defence in the second period, 5-4. But any
hopes of a St. Greg’s comeback were soon dashed when Barney
provided another assist for Nathan to make it 6-4. Finally
in the dying moments of the game, a long range ‘Up & Under’
from Adam dropped over the keeper and into the goal, 7-4.
This was a fine
team performance; the boys played with Great Spirit and
deserved their 1st win against a competitive St.
Greg’s team. “The perfect start to the season”.
Congratulations to both teams for making it an enjoyable
game
