On an early
Sunday morning, the rivalry was a pivotal factor to the flow
of the game between these two close clubs. The game started
as it ended, a scrappy affair, the game was tight throughout
and it was a battle of the midfield. Strong challenges and
flared tempers were present throughout the full 90 minutes.
Euxton Villa were the
first to break the dead lock, a lucky bounce in midfield saw
Dalton with acres of space ahead of him which he fully took
advantage of and calmly slotted past a flapping keeper.
Euxton probably deserved the lead. EV 1-0.
Charnock Richard
thought that they were unfortunate to go behind and quickly
after the re-start put the Euxton defence under lots of
pressure. The away side had few chances to level with
numerous corners and free kicks, which the home team were
glad to see come to no avail. The game was tight and any
sort of mistake from either side was going to be punished,
this time it was Euxton’s lackluster defence that came
undone. A throw from the left hand side into the box, came
back out to a Charnock player. Unchallenged the player
knocked it back in, to find his team mate on the end of it
with a header at the front post to guide past the keeper. EV
1-1 CR.
With Charnock Back on
level terms the Euxton lads were displeased and stepped up
the play, with numerous decisions not going their way the
home side didn’t think it was going to be their day. But
things looked up as space started to develop before the half
time whistle. The home side were beginning to come out on
top in the 50/50’s which allowed the ball to drop to an
orange shirt. With space in midfield Edmonson exchanged
passes and then went on a maisy run which ended in a great
finish from the edge of the area. He ran from the right to
cut in on his left from 20 yards out found the top corner
with a sweat left footed effort. EV 2-1.
Even though Euxton
were winning passes were not reaching there destinations and
tempers started to flare, but with couple of bookings from
the referee tackles calmed down. However, misplaced passes
and tame shots left the Euxton side jogging into the
changing rooms to ponder their performance despite winning
at the break.
Half time: Euxton Villa
1 – 1 Charnock Richard.
In the second half
there were vast improvements, more space developed in
midfield which allowed the superior play to arise. Euxton
started brightly and passes were strung together well, from
the left to the right Euxton were trying to open up the
tight Charnock defence. A few chances arose to Hadji and
Myerscough up front but no end product to show for their
efforts. Euxton piled on the pressure throughout the second
half, but Charnock hit on the break on few occasions. A free
kick from the left towards to back post saw Whewell tangling
with an opponent and was unfortunate to see the referee
award a penalty for hand ball. The Charnock striker stepped
up to a pivotal penalty, the ball was not struck well and
Euxton were fortunate to see the ball bobble past the right
hand post, with the keeper diving the opposite way.
With the game
stretching, the midfielders were happy to see the ball being
played on the floor. This was beneficial when Whewell picked
up the ball from deep, a dominant run towards the defence
saw him pushed out wide, once he beat his man, a powerful
shot from 20 yards out saw his shot cannon of the bar and
out for a throw. With more space developing due to fatigue
from the opposition, a threw ball to Whewell saw him pushed
out wide on the right, another shot from an acute angle saw
it cannon off the bar once again, this time the ball dropped
to an orange shirt but from 5 yards out Sweeney was unlucky
not to make it a two goal lead. With Euxton’s win it sees
them move to the top of the table with 4 wins from 5.
