Home
fixture this week, and I think that both the parents
and the boys were feeling more comfortable to be
playing here today, after last weeks shocking defeat
we needed the familiar surroundings of 'home' to
regroup and readdress the situation in an attempt to
satisfy our hunger for victory, and the sun was
shining too, what more could we ask for?
Immediately from kick-off it was clear that the boys
had taken on board, lessons learnt from last week
and were determined to do well, they also had Dylan
here today to impress, had to prove to him that all
his effort put into training them have not been in
vain. So the game started with great Euxton
possession, good movement of the ball between
players, they were talking to each other, passing
the ball, and they looked like a different team from
last week. And as the opening half progressed we all
watched from the sidelines and we knew that if they
could just get a goal it would really settle the
team, give them the confidence they needed to
succeed in this game. And our prayers were answered
when the Atherton goalie failed to clear a shot
away from a corner and the ball rolled right to
Nathan's feet and all it took was a simple shot to
score, right through the goalie's legs. Fantastic,
we'd got our first goal now we were looking for the
next.
The
first half continued positively for Euxton, great
play from everybody, Mikey again strong in defence
along with Connor, who is really starting to settle
into his role in the team, he has got over his
nerves now and is really proving to be a threat to
the opposing attackers. The midfielders, Nathan, Sam
and Liam were communicating well, getting back to
defend when required and orchestrating some
excellent passing between themselves and Adam, who
was determined to score today after his
disappointing performance last week, and so it
wasn't long before Euxton were in control again and
a great shot by Sam saw us 2-0 up. This was just
what the boys (and parents) needed, and as the time
ticked by towards the end of the first half we were
rewarded again after another first class corner
taken by Sam, was fired straight into the goal and
the boys ended the first half a euphoric 3-0 up.
The
start of the second half gave Lee a chance to switch
the team and play the other substitutes and really
give them a good run out to increase their match
practice, Kieran came on and played well in defence,
he was certainly not afraid to get involved, Brendan
and Samuel came on to give the midfield a rest and
both proved their worth, the speed of Brendan is
certainly going to be one of our team's assets,
whereas Samuel can play strongly and quite
comfortably in
a
number of positions. The second half progressed well
and with the change round of players, Mikey found
himself playing centre midfield and how he didn't
manage to score is a mystery, he was so unlucky as
shot after shot were saved or stopped by the plucky
Atherton goalkeeper, who really kept his team in the
game.
Mid
stages of the second half saw the return of Adam,
who intercepted a superb cross from Sam, took
control of the ball and launched a perfect shot from
half-way that dipped over the head of the keeper
into the back of the net. That really sealed it for
us, we finished the game 4-0, but all credit to
the Atherton Town team, who never gave up, they kept
their heads up all game and displayed great
sportsmanship. And no whinging about the referee
today..Graham had a great game!
So we
secured our first win, so richly deserved. I am sure
Lee, Dylan and all the parents are very proud today
and you should be very proud of yourselves, you were
all fantastic and you have just reaped the rewards
of playing together as a team, and as Lee said about
the Man of the Match, if he'd had ten trophies he
would have given you all one.
Well
done lads, keep it up.
Man Of The Match - Sam Holroyd.
