Match Report U12s vs Walshaw Sports
LFA Cup 19th November
Euxton were drawn against Walshaw Sports
in the 4th round of the LFA cup. This was
undoubtedly going to be the hardest test the boys had faced.
Walshaw had not lost a competitive match in 5 years. The
stand well clear of there respective league and have played
and beaten a number of academy sides.
Euxton started brightly and were
competitive across the pitch. However Steven took a nasty
blow to his face after just 5 minutes following an
“enthusiastic” challenge his nose was broken . It was
clearly painful for Steven as well as a big blow to Euxton.
We had to work hard to stay together but
everyone seemed to be inspired to do a good job against his
respective opponent. Both teams were asking questions of
each other but the Euxton defence were immense.
We were delighted to come in 1-0 ahead at
half time after a great strike by Chris. The team talk at
half time was all about keeping discipline and “doing it for
Steven”.
The second half saw Walshaw use numerous
substitutions to keep constantly refreshed legs coming at
us. We had the 11 boys on the pitch. What followed was
remarkable on two counts. Firstly the dogged determination
of the whole team to hold on to what we had got – especially
the back three who were brilliant, but secondly a piece of
mature goalkeeping from Matty. He was a giant – he came for
crosses time and time again, he pulled of 2 fantastic point
blank saves and he marshalled his defence superbly. Amongst
the company of heroes he was a worthy Man of the Match.
With 4 minutes to go a clearance fell to
Connor who put the ball over the top for Josh to run onto.
He got ahead of the defender and ran at the keeper before
put a well-hit shot into the net. It was a joy to behold.
This truly was a remarkable performance
against a team who truly had forgotten what it meant to lose
a game.
All of us will enjoy this performance
for the total team spirit shown – we did it for Steven.
