On another day Euxton would
have won this game comfortably, give the number of chances
they created and squandered. The home side could not have
got off to a better start with a goal in the first minute.
The ball was worked down the right to Ryan Lilley who
seeing the Freckleton keeper off his line scored with a
perfect lob.
Villa continued to press
looking for a quick second goal, on ten minutes Anton
Martin volleyed over the bar from a Liam Conway corner.
Three minutes later Liam Conway put in a great cross from
the right which was hit first time by Ryan Lilley and flew
inches over the bar.
At this point in the game the
visitors were struggling to contain a rampant Villa
attack. Euxton should have gone further ahead on 17
minutes when Graham Chatterly was put through only to pull
his shot wide, a minute later a good run from Liam Conway
saw his shot saved well by the keeper, and so Villa
continued to press. On the half-hour it looked like the
second goal had come when Anton Martin was put through,
but the Freckleton keeper again saved. So for all their
early efforts Villa still only had the one goal to show
for their endeavours.
Having weathered the early
storm Freckleton were starting to grow in confidence and
nearly drew level on 35 minutes when Shaun Gibbs had to
tip a good effort over the bar. Villa still had chances
and on 38 minutes were awarded a free kick on the edge of
the box, Graham Chatterly took the kick but was just wide
of the mark.
The visitors could now sense
Villa's frustration at not making the game safe, and they
started the second half with far greater purpose, and
worked hard to disrupt the flow of the game. On 55 minutes
Villa felt they should have been awarded a penalty when
Anton Martin was brought down in the box, but the referee
waved play on. Up to this point in the game the visitors
had created very little, but as the Villa's attacks
reduced, Freckleton started to probe the Euxton defence.
On 67 minutes the visitors
were awarded a penalty when keeper Shaun Gibbs had to
bring down a forward as he broke through, but all credit
to the keeper as he kept out the kick with a great save
diving to his right.Villa responded and a good passing
move involving Anton Martin, Ryan Lilley and Mick Bradshaw
saw Anton Martin shoot over the bar. With only one goal
advantage the home side became edgy and paid the price on
75 minutes when the visitors broke into the box, the first
shot was well saved by Shaun Gibbs, but he could do
nothing about the follow up, and the ball was hit into the
bottom corner of the net.
The last fifteen minutes saw
Villa push the visitors back, and Mick Bradshaw hit the
side netting, and Ryan Lilley fired over. The visitors
held out for what for them was a good point, and in
fairness they worked hard all afternoon to contain the
Villa, who themselves must reflect on the first half
chances missed, and two points dropped.
