Villa maintained their run of
impressive form with another solid team performance scoring
five goals from five separate players. The visitors started
well playing neat controlled football, but this was matched
by Villa's determination to take control of the game.
On five minutes Villa came close
when a Liam Conway corner was driven against the bar by Sam
Shone, the Villa pressure continued to build as corners were
won, but the visitors defence held firm. With 12 minutes
gone a Sam Shone shot forced the keeper to save at the foot
of his post. This was followed two minutes later by a Liam
Conway shot which flashed by the foot of the post, Mick
Bradshaw was also just wide with a similar effort from just
outside the box.
Villa continued to press but
were unable to break down the Hesketh defence, after twenty
minutes Villa's man of the match Brad Dowling made a surging
run down the left before playing Anton Martin through, but
his effort was turned away for a corner by the Hesketh
keeper. Five minutes later Mick Bradshaw broke through only
to see his effort saved by the keeper. Villa came even
closer on the half-hour when Liam Conway drove down the
right evading two challenges before delivering a pinpoint
cross which was met by the incoming Anton Martin whose
header hit the top of the bar.
The visitors would have been
pleased with the first half-hour as they worked hard to
contain Euxton, but things went badly wrong for them in the
last fifteen minutes of the half as the home side scored
three goals. Brad Dowling made the initial breakthrough on
32 minutes when he picked up a clearance outside the box
beat a defender before driving in an unstoppable left foot
shot. Villa now increased the pressure and Heath Broadbent
drove forward from centre midfield and set up Anton Martin
whose left foot shot flew narrowly over the angle of post
and crossbar. The second goal came on forty minutes when a
through ball found Graham Chatterly who beat a defender
before rounding the keeper and rolled the ball into the net.
With half-time approaching Villa scored their third as Anton
Martin curled in a great shot from the edge of the area.
The visitors were knocked out of
their stride by the late rush of Villa first half goals and
this allowed Euxton to dictate the play in the second
half. On fifty minutes Sam Shone had a shot saved as villa
pressed on , with an hour gone Liam Conway caused problems
with a run into the box beating three defenders before being
crowded out. Two minutes later Matthew Atherton broke down
the left and his accurate cross was swept home by Sam Shone
for number four. Matthew Atherton's pace down the left was
causing Hesketh problems, on 65 minutes he again got into
the box before shooting into the side netting.
On the right Liam Conway was
also proving to be a handful as on 70 minutes he set up
Heath Broadbent who shot just wide, he then came close
himself meeting a Matthew Atherton cross with a first time
shot. The player was not to be denied and got his reward on
80 minutes as a run down the right saw him beat two
defenders before slipping the ball past the keeper and
inside the near post. Once again Villa were very strong at
the back, and Heath Broadbent controlled the centre of
midfield, as everyone contributed to a fine team
performance.
