Walton West End 0 Euxton
Villa 2
Coming just two days after a
hard fought semi final victory, this was always going to be
a difficult challenge playing a team currently just below us
in the league - especially after they had no match
themselves on Sunday.
Overall Euxton were in command
throughout with Matty not making a save in the match and
only touching the ball 4 times. However Euxton did not have
the usual snap to their play and needed to keep
possession of the ball a little more - especially in
midfield. We couldn't seem to get our passing game
going with too many hopeful, rather than placed passes . As
a result it was a little bit hectic at times.
We had 3 clear cut chances in
the first half following strong runs from Joe, Connor
and Dominic respectively, but we could not find the finish
we were looking for. We forced a number of corners without
looking like we were going to create a chance from them. WWE
on the other hand were working hard and tackling well and
played some good football in parts and so, whilst the game
was played in the WWE half, the match as goalless at half
time.
For the start of the second half
we brought on Myles and Lee because we needed some fresh
legs in midfield and they did very well for us. Myles with
his first touch in the game, won a tackle and played a great
ball in behind the defence for Joe. Having started well his
confidence grew and it was good to see him involved so much.
Lee also got himself involved from the start, was strong in
the tackle and made a number of good passes for Dominic.
As a result the second half was
even more one sided with Joe, and in particular Dominic,
seeming able to beat their man and hit in crosses or shots
at will. However with 3/4 of the game gone it was still
goalless and the Euxton support was starting to get a little
worried.
We brought Matthew back on and
gave him a run up front to give us a different option and it
worked. He won the ball well and attacked the defence
who could only half clear to the edge of the box, where
Myles hit a really well struck shot over the keeper. It was
a great goal just when we needed it.
We had 2 or 3 other chances that
we didn't take before Matthew scored a good team goal.
George won a tackle inside our half and gave the ball to Lee
who used his strength to hold the ball well and wait for the
overlapping Dominic. A good cross into the box was met
by Matthew with a good finish.
2 - 0 was the least we deserved
and with fresh legs you have to suspect that it would have
been more. WWE play some good football and are well
positioned in the league and so it was a worthy win. Once
again the boys handled the situation and won a game in the
last quarter which says a lot about their spirit and fitness
levels.
It was a "squad" performance
with good contributions from all involved.
Man of the Match : Myles -
delivered just when we needed a goal
